Week 13 Story: A Golden Story

Once upon a time, there was girl that lived in a wonderful palace of a village called Far-Far-Away. Her name was Cinderella.

She lived such a wonderful life yet became very spoiled and greedy.

One night, there was a heavy storm. An old lady approaches to the front door of the palace and rings the doorbell. Cinderella answers. The old lady asked if she could come in and stay in for the night until the storm passes by and gives Cinderella a golden bowl as an exchange. Cinderella said, "Oh hell nah..." after looking so disgusted by the way the old lady looks.

Soon after, there was a bright light flashing from the old lady. The old lady has transformed into a beautiful woman; as if she almost looked like Cameron Diaz. The old lady told Cinderella how spoiled and careless she was and cursed her into the ugliest women of all. She will remain ugly for the rest of her life until she does something nice that could fill her heart once again.

After the cursed lady disappears, Cinderella then ran into her room and looked into the mirror and collapsed. She cried and begged for forgiveness, but no one was around. The cursed lady must have made her whole family disappear as well to make her feel lonely.

For the past couple of months, Cinderella had stayed inside her home and hasn't been outside nor seen the light since. One day, she decided to walk out and explore her village. Everyone around the village couldn't stop starring at her because of how ugly she was, yet she realized it didn't matter much to her anymore.

As she explores the village, she stumbles upon a scene. She saw a young girl being picked on by her brothers and took her doll as well. Cinderella approaches to the scene and walks up to the mean brothers. The brothers became shocked and scared because of how ugly Cinderella looked.

Cinderella reaches out her hand and asked politely if they could give her the doll. As she receives the doll, she approaches to the little girl and gave the doll back to her. The little girl looked up into Cinderella's eyes with a smile and hugged her. Cinderella's heart was full.

Soon after, Cinderella suddenly turned into a bright light and transformed back to a beautiful woman as she was before. Cinderella realized that she should never by careless anymore. After this moment, she realized that she should spend more time with the people in her village and to also look out for them as if they were her own family.

Cinderella lived a very happily ever after. The end.

Author's Note:
I chose the Merchant of Seri story, by Ellen C. Babbit because it was very interesting. It made me realize the I could create my own story and convert it to something special from the original story for the readers. The original story was mainly about a merchant being so greedy that he wanted to take the grandmother's gold without any trade or value. Overall, I transitioned the original story to about a person being careless and not letting the old lady in her home from the storm and accepting the old lady's golden gift.

  1. I'm not sure if this was the cause of Cinderella's transformation back to being the beautiful woman she was before, but I want to assume it's because in the moment when she realized that the little girl looked past Cinderella's looks and saw that she was a beautiful person on the inside, Cinderella also realized that her physical beauty did not matter as much as what's on the inside, transforming her back. I love how you included that she gained an appreciation for the people that lived in her village and in her family because it shows that this experience impacted how much she valued relations with the people in her life rather than her vanity.

  2. I like how you used an old woman in your story. I always resort to using an old man and building suspense! I like how you bring modern characters into your stories just as you do with you storybook. Great job!

  3. Hey Hoai! I loved your take on this story. It reminded me of a mix between Cinderella and the Beauty and the Beast, since in your story, Cinderella was disfigured because of her rudeness, and the Beast was disfigured for similar reasons as well. It was very easy to read, and it was cool to see how you made a story from that jataka into your own.
